The George Inn
The George Inn is the quintessential country pub. With our warm and inviting bar area, lined with 14th Century beams, framed with fresh hops and kept warm through our large inglenook fire place - it's the perfect place for a relaxed drink with good company. We have a large walled garden, with views to the Cuckmere River and the South Downs beyond, a haven in the summer months. We serve food throughout the day, with our Lunctime Extras filling the traditional pub grub craving, and an all day menu that reflects wonderful, seasonal British produce. We have five beautiful rooms, a cosy bar and a large restaurant, making The George the perfect place for a get-away. Bring the partner, the family, the dogs, or simply escape solo and enjoy the beauty of the South Downs within a friendly historic setting.
Set in the heart of Alfriston village, surrounded by the Wealden South Downs, within easy reach of vibrant near by cities and towns, The George is the perfect spot for some countryside respite. The South Downs Way splits three ways, going east, west and south, from the very centre of our historic village.
History of Our Building
First licensed in 1397, the foundations of our splendid flint stone and half-timbered building date back to c.1250, and there is even a network of smugglers' tunnels leading from the cellars. One of our five rooms has wall paintings dating back to the 16th century.
We are a family run business and we have been proud to call The George, and Alfriston, our home for over twenty years. Our team are always there to ensure guests have a good stay, offer advice on the local area and keep the local spirit at the heart of everything we do.
